Hamilton Microlab STAR Line Configuration Guide

Hamilton Microlab STAR Line Liquid Handler Configuration

When deciding on a liquid handler it is important that you
know the configuration that will suit your needs.

What assays will I run?

Knowing the assays that you wish to automate and the requirements each will include is important. The reason is you will need to know what labware will need to be used. Will it be tubes, microplates, PCR plates, or reagents?  Also, will they need shaking, heating/cooling, magnetic or vacuum separation, and so on?

Throughput now and beyond.

For each assay, we will want to know your intended output and future output, if possible. Each system comes in multiple sizes and can handle on deck different amounts of plates, reagents, and supporting devices.

Service

When making an investment, you will need to know that you have the coverage to fit your budget in case of a failure.

What assays will I run?

Most use cases will require Span channels.

Span channels provide versatile functionality, transferring liquids from tubes, reagent reservoirs, or other wall plates into well plates, making them a core feature of liquid handlers. They are available in configurations ranging from 2 to 16 channels, with 8 channels being the most common.

Independent Pipetting Channels with CO-RE Technology

  • Custom Configuration: Depending on your needs, the system can be configured with 2-16independent 1000μl pipetting channels.

  • Monitored Air Displacement (MAD): ensures real-time aspiration tracking, providing reliable, consistent, and worry-free walk-away automation.

  • Liquid Level Detection (LLD): combines capacitive (cLLD) and pressure-based (pLLD) modes to detect all liquid types, with dual LLD for challenging samples like foams and cLLD for precise reagent trough detection.

  • CO-RE technology: ensures precise tip attachment with a stable lock-and-key fit, enabling fast, reliable pipetting, reduced stress, and flexibility to use disposable tips, washable needles, or labware tools—all while minimizing aerosol production.

Deckware Manipulation for More Productivity

Robotic arms like the RoMa and PosID enhance system versatility by transferring deckware between peripherals, such as on-deck shakers and plate readers, automating sample tracking and improving overall efficiency and functionality.

Autoloader

The Autoload option automates labware identification with a 1D barcode reader, ensuring accurate loading and verification of sample tubes, microplates, and carriers for enhanced method security.

Plate Gripper iSWAP

iSWAP gripper enables precise, automated labware handling with seamless integration, offering flexibility to transport plates, tubes, and carriers across the deck with speed and accuracy.

CO-RE Tools

The CO-RE Gripper, attachable to single channels, allows effortless plate transfers on the deck without a robotic hand and CO-RE lid suction capability for precise lid handling.

Simultaneous Pipetting of 96 or 384 channels and Parallel Processing

The CO-RE 96 Probe Head allows for efficient high-throughput pipetting, handling all 96 wells of a plate simultaneously with precision and speed, making it ideal for tasks like plate replication, reagent distribution, and assay setup in high-volume workflows.

The CO-RE 96 Probe Head (1μl to 1000μl).

The CO-RE 96 Probe Head offers flexibility by functioning as a single, 8- or 12-channel pipette, selectively using a single row or column of disposable tips. This adaptability is ideal for tasks like pipetting standards, controls, or performing serial dilutions.

CO-RE 384 Probe Head.

The CO-RE 384 Probe Head delivers high-throughput precision, enabling simultaneous pipetting across 384 wells with reliable CO-RE technology for secure tip attachment and exceptional accuracy. Utilizing Rocket tips or pre-stacked tip racks seamlessly transforms into a 96 Probe Head for added versatility.
